Empowering Young Adults Beyond Foster Care

Every year, about 20,000 young people leave foster care and face many challenges as they start living independently. These young adults are much less likely to go to college, with only around 10% enrolling, compared to their peers. They also find it harder to get stable jobs, and their average income is lower at about $25,000 a year, while others their age earn around $36,000. Many of these young people are at a higher risk of becoming homeless, with studies showing that up to 20% experience homelessness within a year of leaving foster care. Mental health is another major issue, as they often deal with anxiety, depression, and other problems related to their traumatic pasts. Additionally, they are more likely to get involved in the criminal justice system, being three times more likely to be incarcerated than other young people. Despite these serious challenges, many show strong resilience and find ways to succeed. However, achieving positive outcomes usually requires support from social services or mentors. Their journey is often marked by trauma, highlighting the need for better systems to help these young adults transition to independent living.

Why a Building?

To make a positive impact on the lives of young adults, we need to create a strong foundation for our programs. This foundation is important because it ensures that the resources and services we offer are effective. When young adults do not have a stable place to live, they may find it hard to develop important life skills, secure jobs, and build healthy relationships. This can lead to ongoing challenges and missed opportunities.

Investing in a safe and supportive independent living space is crucial. It allows us to create a caring community where young adults can grow, learn, and gain confidence as they transition into adulthood. By providing reliable housing, we enable them to focus on their personal development and set the stage for future success. This approach can improve their quality of life and benefit society as a whole.
